In this interview feature, we speak with Sonar Fiction about influences, navigating the digital era as a musician, the new project and more.

Full Q&A along with links and a stream of their video can be found below.

Where are you from and what style of music do you create? (In your own words, not necessarily in marketing terms or by popular genre classifications.)

We are from Bogota, Colombia, and we are currently studying in Boston. We all met each other because of our common passion for music and especially for Rock music.

We play Alternative Rock Music with influences such as Indie, Electronic, Funk, Psychedelic and touches of our Latin American music heritage.

What led you down this path of music and what motivates you to stay the course?

Music is a way of expression and it is always exciting to share our artistry with people and receive their impressions; it becomes communication between the artist and the audience. This communication keeps us motivated to create more music.

Who or what are your biggest influences when it comes to your creativity?

Our biggest influences are Foals, Soda Stereo, Radiohead, and Pink Floyd.

How is your new release different than previous ones? Did you set out to accomplish anything specific?

In our new release we set out to create a bigger product than our previous ones. We collaborated with different artists from our hometown to create a music video. We tried to give a visual representation to our music and we feel extremely happy with the final product.

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

Technology helped us a lot because now it is possible to distribute our music on streaming services and platforms such as Facebook. However, it’s challenging to promote our music because we do not have the economic resources that a record label has to expose their artist.

How do you feel about streaming services? Any romantic attachments to the physical formats: vinyl, 8-track, cassettes, CDs?

Streaming has been a wonderful tool for the band to present our music worldwide. Since we are Boston based but we are all from Colombia we have a fan base that is easy to reach via streaming services. Physical formats will always be important for us. As the band grows we want to be more attach to this format.

Where can we follow you online and hear more music?

You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, under the name Sonar Fiction.  Our music can be found on Youtube, Soundcloud, and Spotify.

Anything else before we sign off?

Thanks for the interview, we appreciate your time and interest in our music.
