South London four-piece Glossii, are preparing to unveil their swaggering new single, Runaway Rockaway, due for release on 5th September 2018 via Big Indie Records.
Fusing a multitude of genres spanning post-punk, alt.rock, disco punk and garage punk, Glossii embody the rebellious zeitgeist of 90’s and early 00’s female fronted rock bands. Speaking to Diva Magazine, Glossii stated that “…we want to excite, invigorate, and bring out the raging passion in people…” a sentiment that can be clearly heard on their vibrant new single.
In this interview spotlight, I chat with the band about their latest release, challenges, motivations and more.
Full Q&A along with music and links below.
Let’s dive a little deeper into You, the artist and your music. What attracted you to this genre(s) or style(s)?
To be honest we didn’t really plan on any genre at all, we all planned to widen our music as much as possible but what we found was that our music naturally shifts towards a strong, aggressive and fast sound. Our style on stage and off is strange and bright without being serious and that’s just because that’s what were like in real life.
What led you into this journey with music? And further, what drives you to push it out to the public?
Music has always been a big part of all of our lives like it is for almost everyone.. its the one thing that can help us express ourself in a fun way. We want to push it out to the public because we want to have fun and express ourselves with strangers, people that we would never have met without this similar love for music.
Who or what influences your creativity? Have your tastes in music changed over time?
I’m influenced by quite a few things. From a young age I would cross dress. In time it has evolved into what it is now. I am inspired by anti fashion I like to mix two whole different styles and combine them into one. I guess that’s how we write our music as well mixing punk with indie. My music taste has changed over time. I used to be really into pop out with bands such as Green Day. Now I’m into post-punk. With bands such as shame. I also love 80’s synth pop.
Were you trying to accomplish anything specific on this new project? Creatively or otherwise?
We tried to accomplish something really fast pace to grab peoples attention. I added a slide on the guitar in the middle 8 of runaway ROCKAWAY to add a dreamier feel. It contrasts to the rowdy finish.
What was the last song you listened to?
The last song i listened to was ‘(I don’t want to go to) Chelsea’ its this old alternative song by Elvis Costello & The Attractions its one of those songs that would be impossible to sit still to whilst you’re listening
Which do you prefer? Vinyl? CDs? MP3s?
I prefer vinyl because these days they are seen as a big deal. People see it as more of a collectible item. I also prefer the tinny sound it has.
How about this one…. Do you prefer Spotify? Apple Music? Bandcamp? Or something else? Why?
I prefer Spotify as is simply designed and you can publicly share and save playlists etc.
Other than the digital era overwhelming us with access to an abundance of music, what is the biggest challenge you face when trying to connect with or find new fans?
The biggest challenge I’ve come to with connecting with fans is trying to appeal to people who aren’t into the genre of punk
